Friday, November 1, 2024
Episode Description
How has genocide remembrance served reconciliation efforts in Cambodia? How do official and unofficial actors, from the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) to everyday citizens, create memory around the Cambodian genocide? In today’s episode of “Conversations on Genocide,” Bekir speaks with Dr. Annie Rappeport, an instructor at the University of Virginia and dialogue designer at The Karsh Institute for Democracy, to analyze post-genocide justice in Cambodia and the various mediums through which it has manifested itself, alongside what the future of genocide commemoration in Cambodia holds.
Annie Rappeport holds a doctorate in international education policy with a specialization in international peace and environmental studies. She conducted in-depth research related to education-centered reparations being developed jointly through transitional justice and civil society actors in Cambodia. She also conducted a multi-year qualitative case study that culminated in her dissertation, "Past as Prologue to Peace in Post-Genocide Cambodia: A Study of Memory Construction and Memory Education by the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia and Cambodian Civil Society."Rappeport has held various academic roles at the University of Virginia and the University of Maryland at College Park. At UVA, she teaches graduate level research methods courses. At UMD, she teaches a genocide prevention and education course. In her current role as a post-doctoral researcher in the Division of Student Affairs at UMD, Rappeport leads a research agenda aimed at cultivating an ecosystem of conflict resolution, belonging, and well-being on campus. Her strategic planning and data analysis have had a direct impact on the campus-wide Mental Health Task Force, fostering a culture of well-being.Additionally, she is involved in two research and teaching fellowships: Is the Good Life Political? Research Project Fellowship at the University of Virginia Karsh Institute of Democracy and the Charles E. Scheidt Faculty Fellowship at Binghamton University's Institute for Genocide and Mass Atrocity Prevention (I-GMAP).
